Gmail Checker login problem

Looks like a few people are having login problems with Gmail Checker. Since this doesn't happen to me, it is particularly difficult to verify. It would be helpful if you could leave a comment if the extension works or doesn't work for you and your location, e.g. UK, US, etc.

For anyone having the problem, could you try version 1.3.1.1 which is just version 1.3.1 with maxVersion bumped to allow it to be installed on Firefox 3.5, and follow these debugging steps:

  • Clear all of your cookies
  • Log in (with the extension not the web form on gmail.com)
  • If succeeds, please tell me the steps you've taken, e.g. 1-2-3 or 1-2-4-2-3, etc.
  • If fails, go to http://www.gmail.com/, and then go back to step 2

I think I've found the cause. Please try this version, and report if it works.

Please try this version and report if it works (with the debug log).

Update: 22/9

Another version to test. If it doesn't work, please include the debug log in your report; otherwise, it won't be much help.

I've got a general idea about the problem but doing guess-debugging is no fun at all.

    I have tried all 4 versions (current 2.0, the 2.1 beta (with the Mark as Read option (which is really useful for me by the way), the one you suggest 1.3.1.1 and the one that you think is correcting the issue (file 2.1.1 which is in fact 2.1.0.90)).
    And for all I have the same issue.
    When I launch FFox, then check the mails, it fails (can't log in). Then I go to www.gmail.com, and if I check mails again, it works on both accounts I have set up in Gmail Checker.

    So : 1-2 : fails
    1-2-4-2 : works

    What is strange is that I use FFox at work too, and I don't have this problem with this extention. It works there without the need to go first to www.gmail.com.
    At work : 1-2 works...

    Please tell me if I can do something to help you as I can test at home and at work on working and non working systems.

  3. Just one remark : seems that it is really not linked with cookies. Before and after cleaning cookies, the result is the same (still not work at home, and work at the office)

    (By the way, I did not delete all my cookies on the 1st test above with 2.1.1 as I need them and someone mentioned it didn't change anything, but I did use the button to do so on 1.3.1.1 - before and after doing that both failed.)

    Anything else to try?

  7. I seem to have 2.1.1. working suddenly.

    I reinstalled 2.1.1 and then signed into one gmail account (tip from earlier comment) and closed the page (didn't sign out), then Checker works for all accounts.

    But I then signed out of them and they still worked.

    I restarted the browser, and still works.

    Maybe because I used the button on 1.3.1.1 to clear gmail cookies, which I didn't do last try with 2.1.1?

    So, try 2.1.1 and first sign in on gmail.com (maybe they changed their cookies and this updates yours?). If that doesn't work, try clearing gmail cookies and then try Checker.

  8. I've just tried this on a 2nd computer and so far I can't get it to work.

    I didn't try 1.3.1.1 first but I deleted all gmail or mail.google.com cookies, and I also tried signing in directly onsite. No luck.

    Clear all cookies.
    With 1.3.1.1 :
    1. check mail -> fail
    2. login in www.gmail.com
    3. check mail -> OK
    4. close the page www.gmail.com
    5. check mail -> OK
    6. log off www.gmail.com
    7. check mail -> Fail

    Clear cookies
    With your test version 2.1 :
    1. check mail -> fail
    2. login in www.gmail.com
    3. check mail -> OK
    4. close the page www.gmail.com
    5. check mail -> OK
    6. log off www.gmail.com
    7. check mail -> OK
    8. Close the browser, then restart it
    9. check mail -> Fail (here I have another result than a previous comment)

  13. I have tried all ways, it only functioned when I was logged in 1.3.1.1 but when I logged out, it wasn't functioning anymore.
    With the Versions 2.0 and 2.1.0.90 it didn't functioned, even when I was logged in.

    Uhhh, today it stopped working after several days OK. No idea why. Signing in to gmail didn't help.

    This is a weird one. Maybe gmail is messing with you? ;-)

    Very bizarre. Got to the office and the one there that didn't work before just STARTED working today, while the one at home that was working, stopped working today. (Again, 2.1.1.1.)

    I Just want to precize that i deleted all my cookies before... on Firefox 3.5.3 maybe it help...
    And before this update i was not able to make works Gmail Checker what ever i try

  20. Confirm. Not a single extension (Gmail Notifier, Gmail Manager, WebMail Checker) works at the moment, but Gmail Checker's version from 22/9 does. Great job! Hope other authors will find the reason and make fixes ASAP too...

  25. I had been using Gmail Manager v0.5.7.4, on Portable Firefox (3.5.3) on 2 different PCs in 2 different locations. At home (ASUS laptop, Vista Home Premium), Gmail Manager worked, but here at work (Lenovo desktop, XP Pro SP3), it didn't. I came across this page, and decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did - it works.

    I disabled Gmail Manager, and installed Gmail Checker v2.1.0.93, restarted, and adjusted the settings & options. Gmail Checker is working perfectly - thank you.

  27. Just discovered your checker because now its the only version that works. Can i suggest something that I love about the other ones (notifier/manager) that would probably improve yours? An option for "left-click opens gmail."

  35. 2.1.0.93 sometimes can't update unread counts though there are new unread mails.

    Login has no problem though.

  38. I had some problems, but they come and go.

    I am in Dubai and if I log in without proxy it works, if I use UK proxy it doesn't. To solve that I need to switch the proxy off, check mail with Gmail Checker, then I can switch proxy On and it will work until reboot.

    note: same behavior on XP sp3 and OSX 10.6.1 both latest firefox.

    Wouldn't it be great to have an option for choosing that the sound of the email would simply be the standard system's "new email" sound? just like the other plugin I tried before.

  47. I tried all versions you posted or recommend but none worked. It actually took so much (this certain problem) for me to know that I rely on this add on so much. After trying to solve the problem, I have turned to Gmail Notifier for a temporary solution. When Gmail Checker is fixed I will no doubt return to it.

    the notification pop up appears everytime gmail checker checks for email.
    it would be very nice to get the pop up notification once only, as in the case of sound notification.

    Im too has problem with the extension disponible on addons firefoox site. But the Update of day 22/9 works to me. I just unistall a original addon and reinstall the version that you recommend.

  58. Version 2.1.0.93 works for me. I had the release version from addons.mozilla.org. It quit working from home for me several days ago, and quit working at work today. But the new version works normally.

  62. Thank you so much for this great little tool. If I had some means to repay you, I really would. And yes the new version fixed the login issue for me, and the "mark as read" option is the addition which I was longing for since day 1!! But can you change the code some way, so that the user is able to mark many messages as read at once without having to open the menu, choose the email address, and then choose the message, and to do this with every message! This would especially help me since I use about 10 gmail accounts, and I get mail on each account everyday. Thanks !!

  63. I went on vacation last week, got back today and couldn't log into any of my accounts using gmail checker 2.0 from mozilla addons. So I grabbed your latest Update: 22/9 version 2.1.0.93 and all works now.

    Connecting with ff3.5.3 winxp sp3 from asia/taiwan, but the accounts were created in the US.

    Also, I enabled the "popup notifications" and they are fairly useless... all stacked on top of each other and they all disappear after only a couple of seconds making it impossible to see the content of any of them. They also reappear every time the accounts are checked for new mail, even if no "newer" messages are seen since the last check.
